- Max Verstappen when asked by his team to swap positions on track with teammate Carlos Sainz.
I like his style.

Well, he certainly can’t be accused of being ambiguous.

Fuck those team orders. What is this, Ferrari 2002?

I fell asleep at lap 20 something. Was there anything interesting? And what did the team say after his answer?

A couple of incidents, Hulkenberg got himself run into by Massa after he didn’t leave Felipe enough room coming out of the pits which put him in the wall and put out the safety car, Button ran into the back of Maldonado, Hamilton retired, a fan took a stroll on the track which caused the second safety car. Not the most interesting race but it wasn’t too dull either.
This was a track that didn’t suit Mercedes so I think it will be an outlier rather than an indication of the future, but as a Vettel fan, I’m pleased and I hope Ferrari can take the fight to Mercedes for the remaining races.
Verstappen got back on the lead lack thanks to the safety cars and proceeded to charge through the field to 8th place. He came close to Perez in the last couple of laps and wasn’t making the pass happen. The team seemed to ask him to switch places with Sainz to allow Carlos to have an attempt at passing the Force India to which Maz objected, rightly so. I think the team asked him again to do the switch but I don’t think we got a real rebuttal to the ‘NO’ on the broadcast.

I dislike race deciding team orders as much as anyone but I’m not entirely opposed to the practice. Earlier in the year Red Bull asked their drivers to trade places when they were queued and stuck behind someone, I think they both ended up getting past that car but when Daniel couldn’t make any more progress than Daniil did*, the team asked them to swap back before the end of the race. That’s fair and that I’m OK with.
*I might have the order of the drivers wrong there, whatever

Alright thanks, i did get to see hulk vs massa.
What was the reason for lewis to retire? I used to like him until he started to dress like a clown and comparing himself to Senna. It must have been awesome to look at an idiot crossing the track.

No worries, I wasn’t sure if that happened before lap 20 so I just made sure to mention it anyway.
He reported a loss of power and started falling back through the field. The team tried to troubleshoot and fix it on the go but to no avail. Sounded like an issue with the ERS system not charging and then not being able to deploy any electric power.
Both McLarens ended up retiring as well, which I guess is no surprise. As did Massa with a gearbox issue that I wonder if it manifested from the shunt with Hulkenberg.

I think David Hobbs had the best idea of why they asked him to do it, to get Sainz ahead of Maldonado in the driver’s points. That’s about the only thing I can think that makes sense, Sainz didn’t seem to be any quicker to have a better shot at passing another car.

Sainz was on newer faster tires. The theroey was that they would give him a few laps to take Checo, but when he couldn’t get close enough to The Wee Baby, the team realized that there was no point.

Ah, I didn't know that. I didn't hear about the team orders until the last lap, when it was probably too late for Sainz to get after the car ahead.

FOM played it when they were still on their pentultimate lap, which means that they probably got the call with two whole laps to go, giving Sainz a couple of chances to have a go. If he couldn’t pull it off, they probably would have switched them back.
